Lucian Leape is Adjunct Professor of Health Policy at the Harvard School of Public Health and member of the Institute of Medicine Quality of Care in America Committee. He is currently Content and Dissemination Core Director of one of three national Centers of Excellence in Patient Safety supported by AHRQ focusing on improving medication safety across the continuum of care and patient groups. Dr. Leape received his AB in Chemistry from Cornell University and his MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Leape has also served as Registrar in the Department of Surgery at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool and was an Instructor to Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty at Harvard, he was Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief of Pediatric Surgery at New England Medical Center. In 1987, Dr. Leape received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Pediatric Surgical Association. Dr. Leape served on the Physician Payment Review Commission Advisory Commission on Access from 1991-1998.

Dr. Leape is a health policy analyst whose research has focused on error prevention and appropriateness of care. Lucian L. He has been a leading advocate of the non punitive systems approach to the prevention of medical error and has led several studies of adverse drug events and their underlying systems failures. In addition, he has directed research into overuse and underuse of cardiovascular procedures. Dr. Leape is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation and the Institute of Medicine Quality of Care in America Committee, which recently released its report, "To Err is Human." He has also served on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Health Services Research Review Committee and the Physician Payment Review Commission (PPRC) Access Advisory Committee. Dr. Leape is a 1998 recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Investigator Award, and in 1999 he received the Donabedian Award from the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Leape is the author of over 180 medical articles, book chapters and monographs.
